Milled Silver Issue

Half Groats

WTH-4185:  1560-61 Elizabeth 1st MILLED Silver Half Groat.  Bust A, mm star.  A single issue coin being one of the rarest of the silver “milled” issues.  Coincraft states: “They are rare and are usually found in VG or F condition and are often damaged”.  The damage referred to would be as a result of Tudor people biting the coin to see if it was genuine – they are a very thin coin and the public of the day would not recognise the issue and so would be naturally suspicious.  This coin is better than the Coincraft example and has more facial detail than the Spink example.  Sold with original old collection ticket.  A very rare coin.  £595

WTH-3904:  1562 Elizabeth 1st MILLED Silver Sixpence.  Tall bust, decorated dress, better grade.  Borden / Brown #24.  £169

Hammered Silver Issue

Shillings

WTH-4569:  Elizabeth I Hammered Silver Shilling.  Initial mark = hand (1590-92), bust 6b (6th issue).  Nice grade for issue – these were notoriously poorly struck, especially on the obverse.  This one has a strong bust.  £179

WTH-4570:  Elizabeth I Hammered Silver Shilling.  Initial mark = woolpack (1594-96), bust 6b (6th issue).  Nice grade for issue – these were notoriously poorly struck, especially on the obverse.  This one has a strong bust.  £189

WTH-4246:  Elizabeth I Hammered Silver Shilling.  Very good grade for issue and this one a better early issue (mm cross-crosslet, 1560-61).  A difficult coin to photograph so an extra close-up image here.  £245

WTH-4484:  Elizabeth 1st Hammered Shilling. Choice.  Second issue, bust C3, i.m. martlet = 1560 to 1561.  Full flan, good strike, attractive toning including some electric blue.  Extra image here.  Without doubt, the best example of this and any other Elizabeth 1st shilling issue that I have ever had and probably ever seen outside of a book.  Spink’s illustrated example is probably a similar grade but not struck as well and not a full flan.  Easily a choice coin.  £675 RESERVED (S.B.)

“Other”

WTH-4916:  1586 Elizabeth 1st Silver Counter / Jetton.  A stunning piece being similar in size to a milled Elizabeth 1st shilling.  It depicts the Elizabeth 1st with the Earl of Leicester by her side in attendance.  The queen is presenting a sword to two subservient, high ranking officials of the United Alliance.  The reverse states “The word of God is sharper than a sword”, a saying paraphrased many times by various famous individuals throughout history.  Only the second example I’ve ever seen – the first being worn, pierced and sold for in excess of £600.  To all intents and purposes this is a silver medal although Medallic Illustration term it a counter / jetton.  A beautiful piece of English Tudor history!  £575

WTH-4875:  1588 Anglo-Dutch "Spanish Armada" Medal.  Copper medalet or more likely a jetton.  Packed with imagery and very evocative of the period.  £69
