Henry II, Richard I, John & Henry III

Henry II (AD 1154-89) Read about Henry II.

"Tealby"

WMH-3762:  Henry II “Tealby” Hammered Silver Penny.  Class A (1158-1163), better Lincoln mint.  Unusually strong legend and bust.  £159

WMH-3889:  Henry II Hammered Silver Tealby Penny.  Bust F, Thetford mint and as near “as struck” as you’ll see.  £215

WMH-4436:  Henry II Hammered Silver “Tealby” Penny.  Bust F1, ROGIER of Canterbury.  A very round flan with strong detail especially on the bust.  The reverse cross and crosslet arrangement is unusual in that the cross is thick and the crosslets are more like cross pattees.  £189

Richard I (AD 1189 - 1199) Read about Richard I

WMH-4248:  Richard 1st Hammered Silver Penny, Canterbury.  +VLARD(O)N:CANT.  Rarest class II, 5 pearls to crown.  £115

WMH-4478:  Richard 1st Hammered Silver Penny, London.  Class 4b, STIVENE.ON.LVN.  Interesting pearl arrangement to crown.  Nice and clear obverse and reverse for this issue.  £129

WMH-4720:  Richard 1st Hammered Silver Penny.  A coin with full silver content and full weight yet undeniably having crude and irregular lettering, a crude bust and a sceptre which resembles a spear.  The mint town does appear to begin with an “S” which could only be Shrewsbury.  This would be a very rare mint town with no examples coming up at auction in the recent past to my knowledge.  With a little imagination you could see the moneyer as being Reinald or Reinavd but was Shrewsbury issuing coins of this crude nature?  The only other answer would be a contemporary counterfeit but why make a counterfeit with the full silver content and full weight?  A large image supplied.  An interesting coin!  £215

Long Cross - Unusual:

WMH-4831:  Henry III Voided Long Cross Medieval Penny.  A double reverse cross penny.  However, there is more to this coin:  Side A clearly reads RICARD-O(N.???) with the mint town deliberately over-struck with what you’d assume would be the new mint town.  The theory is that moneyers moving town (for whatever reason) took their dies and coins with them.  Once in a new town, the old coins were slightly altered to take account of the new residence.  Ricard is recorded at several different towns.  I can neither make out the old or new mint town, although I have no doubt that it can be done by someone with more patience / time than me!   Side B may well once have had the expected obverse but is now predominantly a reverse.  Its legend is all over the place with …RICVS RE… clear (HENRICVS REX) and also OH of ON.  A fun coin for someone looking for a challenge!  £45
